An aviation welding technician is just not like any other welder. The level of responsibility on the shoulders of an aviation welder is far more than any other welding specialist. An aircraft’s welding expert must have extraordinary skills because it’s an aircraft they’re dealing with, where even the slightest of mistakes can cause a fatal accident and cost many lives.

Apart from professional certifications, an aviation welder must also possess certain qualities to become a great welder, instead of being just another welder.

Must have attention to detail

A welder working in the aviation industry must be on his toes every second while inspecting, welding, or clearing the aircraft for flight. Attention to detail and identifying correctly working and error-free aircraft for the safety of the pilot, passengers, and crew members is the primary responsibility. When you know what you are doing, and for what purpose, that you can do it with the due priority and attention.

A no-compromise approach

If there is anyone who really cannot afford a compromise on a compromise, it’s the aircraft welder doing the repair work on an aircraft; be it the exhaust system, mount, or any other component. Top-quality work guarantees the survival of people traveling on an airplane.

When a welder decides to become an aviation expert, one thing he must not do is compromise. He should not assume and hope that everything will be fine despite feeling a need to perform welding of a particular component to avoid potential future damage.

An aviation welder should not at all be familiar with phrases like:

“it will work for the time being”,

“it seems all right” or

“the crack isn’t big enough to be harmful”.

Must be critical to minor details

A great welder, in the aircraft maintenance and inspection field, must be habitual to pay a great deal of attention to minor things that may be overlooked by average welders.

The reason why the detailed approach is needed is that the aircraft is flying at such a high speed and altitude that even the smallest of leakages, cracks in the structure, or any other component of the plane can rip it apart in seconds.

Must be a perfectionist

It requires a perfectionist to minimize the chances of anything happening to the aircraft in the air. Only a perfectionist would do his absolute best to make sure there’s nothing left on the plane that might cause any problem.

A perfectionist attitude, combined with the professional knowledge and skill set, enables him to go into the details and find hidden problems that might not be obvious during the preflight inspection, but may become evident during the flight.

Must be decisive

Welders don’t only weld but make decisions whether to

  • weld or not
  • how to weld
  • when to weld
  • When there’s a part that seems to be becoming weak
  • when it’s the right time to weld and when to replace it

It all depends on the decisiveness of the welder.

A great welder, especially in the aviation industry, must be able to make decisions on a practical basis and must rely on his tested methods so that he can mitigate the risks.
