Who is an aviation welding technician?
According to the Canadian Council for Aviation & Aerospace (CCAA), an aviation welding technician is a tradesman who:
- is well-versed in safety requirements
- practices and promotes safe habits in the workplace
- has the patience, dedication and intelligence needed to master the skills necessary for becoming an apt welding technician
- stays updated on the latest welding standards and technology implemented by CCAA.
It bears mentioning that the minimum standard for different welding processes varies depending on equipment availability and work requirements in different parts of Canada.
Aviation welding technician: Certification requirements
CCAA is the body that certifies aviation welding technicians. To become certified, an applicant needs to acquire the knowledge and skills outlined in the Occupational Standard list. You also need at least 60 months’ experience in the occupational, inter-provincial or provincial welding of which a minimum of 24 months experience is required in aviation welding. You will be required to present a copy of the experience certificate alongside your application for certification.
A CCAA credited aviation welding technician course is accredited by CCAA on a month-to-month basis.

Aviation welding technicians can earn anywhere from $35,000 to $90,000. They can also find work as military support welders in the Airforce, Marines or Army where earnings can vary depending on experience.
