Buying an aircraft is a huge investment that people often make only once in their life; hence they should be kept in good condition.

The best way to keep your aircraft in good working condition is by hiring professional aviation welding technicians for maintenance.

Welding technicians weld different aircraft parts together to keep them in pristine condition. There are two types of welds: bad welds and good welds. A good weld is one in which the metal parts are firmly welded together without any gaps, whereas a bad weld is the one in which you can easily spot the gaps.

The only way to avoid bad welding is by hiring certified aircraft welding technicians who are experienced and know how to professionally weld aircraft.

However, most people don't know the difference between a good and bad weld, so they often get scammed by unprofessional aviation welding technicians.

If you are also unable to distinguish between a good and bad weld, then keep on reading. In this blog post, we will discuss in detail why welds sometimes look bad and how you can identify good and bad welding.

Why Are Certified Welding Technicians Important?

When a technician makes a weld, they need to join two or more metals. To achieve this, the welder needs high pressure, extreme heat, and precise conditions. All of this will make the process of welding smooth and will make it easier for the welder to join metals.

The welding process is called a semi-automated process as it still requires a lot of manual control. This means that the welder has to control a lot of operations in order to achieve good welding. Also, if the welder cannot control the welding process, it will lead to quality issues.

Quality issues occur when the welder follows a poor welding procedure or has a poor setup. Since welding is a manual process, most things are controlled manually, while there are some things that rely on advanced technology.

Hence in order to achieve good welding quality, you will need to hire a certified aviation welding technician.

Welding Process Rating

In a dream world, we’d be able to rate the welds on a scale of 0-10 based on their quality. However, unfortunately, in the real world, we don’t have a perfect scale to rate the welding process of a welding technician.

And to make things more complicated, every company has their own rating that varies from project to project and even from operator to operator.

So in the real world, welding ratings are based on the welder's experience. The ratings you see are based on how the operator feels about each weld and how good they think the welds are.

Hence welders care a lot about their ratings, but still, welding has a lot to do with skills and experience rather than ratings.

Signs Of Good Welding

Here are some signs of good welding:

Clean Seam: if the weld seam is clean, then it is a sign of good welding. Because while welding if the seams are not clean, you will see that they are not neat and improper. Poor wedding procedures are often the culprit of bad seams.

Uniform Weld Bead: the welding technician needs to make sure that while welding, the weld bead is consistent and uniform because if it is not uniform, it will look bad.

Correct Welding Setup: The weld setup is the order in which the welder makes a weld. So if the welder’s welding setup is clean, then it is a sign of good welding.

Signs Of Bad Welding

Here are some signs of bad welding:

Open Seam: sometimes, the seam in the weld opens up as the weld cools down. This is a sign of bad welding.

Cracked Welds: the cracks in the weld are also a sign of bad welding. Cracked welds will lead to mechanical problems, so make sure you get them fixed timely.
