The man’s desire for flying has been around for ages and it is for this main reason that the passion for flying light aircraft still exists.

Though now we have larger, more commercial aircraft to accommodate the needs of more passengers, people still love to fly light aircraft.

Our own desire to reach out and touch the sky is only fulfilled by flying light aircraft. The majority of aircraft owners love the freedom and the adrenaline that flying light aircraft provides.

But with all the fun comes huge responsibility as maintaining a light aircraft is more difficult than maintaining a commercial airplane so it is important that you get your light airplane checked by a certified aviation welding technician.

If you don't know the difference between light and commercial aircraft then don't worry, in this blog, we have explained in detail all the things you should know about light aircraft.

What Is A Light Aircraft?

So the first thing that comes to everyone's mind is what exactly is a light airplane and how does an aircraft have to be in order to fall under the category of light aircraft.

Light airplanes are aircraft that have an MTOW (maximum gross takeoff weight) of 12,500 pounds or less. Typically light aircraft are used for general aviation but they can be used for performing roles under more specialized aerial work and commercial air transport.

This means that a light airplane typically performs the tasks of taking passengers to small islands and is mostly used for personal use.

All aircraft that fall under the category of light aircraft are usually made from aluminum which is typically strong but surprisingly lightweight and some parts of the aircraft are also made from other metals such as titanium and steel.

What Is Light Aircraft Used For?

Because of their size and weight, light aircraft are preferred to perform a bunch of roles.

Most people who own a personal aircraft have light aircraft since it is far easier to own a small aircraft and use it to fly across the world as compared to taking a commercial flight.

Small commercial operations also use light aircraft to transport freight and passengers across relatively short distances.

Some other roles that light aircraft perform include aerial surveying, sightseeing, photography, light cargo operations, skywriting and banner towing.

Cirrus Sr22s, Robinson R44s and Cessna 172s are some of the most popular light aircraft that are used today.

Are Light-Sport Aircraft And Light Aircraft The Same?

You might have heard the terms ultralight aircraft and light sport aircraft being used from time to time.

Light-sport aircraft typically do not fall within the same category as light aircraft. Most light aircraft are over the maximum weight allowed for someone to fly a sports aircraft.

Most light sport and ultralight aircraft are used to perform general aviation roles but are also used for recreational purposes.

Since these aircraft are relatively new there are no standards set or worldwide description of rules in terms of specification, regulations and certifications. This means that any country can have their own rules and regulations for governing ultralight and light-sport aircraft.

Hence this means that Canada can have its own sets of rules and regulations for ultralight and light-sport aircraft and it can be different from the rules of other countries.

Ultralight Aircraft

Ultralight aircraft are smaller than light aircraft and have an MTOW of about 70 kg or 115 pounds, but they are allowed to have a little extra allowance for ballistic parachute systems and landing gear.

Light-Sport Aircraft

Light-sport aircrafts are a relatively new type of aircraft and it can have an MTOW of not more than 1320 pounds. These aircraft are simple to fly and come in many different designs.
